Funded by the MRC as part of UK Research and Innovation , the LMS has a collaborative working culture and new state-of-the-art building based in the heart of West London in the Hammersmith Hospital Campus (W12).

The LMS aims to deliver transdisciplinary team science, in synergistic interaction with Imperial College and the wider national research environment.

Job Description

Overall Purpose:

The LMS transferred a large part of the institute's activity to a new building in 2022. A construction defect has meant that the flooring within the laboratories and office areas of the new building will need to be replaced. These works have the potential to cause major disruption to scientific activity. The postholder will be responsible for co-ordinating and enabling a programme of work to be undertaken by LMS research groups and facilities in preparation for the works to minimise impact. The postholder will provide the key interface between the repair contractors / planners and the LMS users, interpreting and developing guidance, responding to queries and ensuring that problems are resolved in a timely way. The postholder will also be a key point of contact for the contractor teams and will report on the flooring replacement programme to the senior leadership team at LMS.

Main Duties / Key Responsibilities:

Develop an excellent understanding and contribute to the development of the flooring replacement programme.

Form a strong working relationship with the external team of planners and contractors.

Become the main point of contact for the flooring repair programme within LMS, providing advice and guidance, co-ordinating activities and motivating users to play their part in the overall programme of activity.

Liaise with users to respond to queries or requests for information from the contractor team (and vice versa)

Co-ordinate and provide support for all internal activities that need to be undertaken in the weeks prior to commencement of the flooring programme. Ensure that data from all institute groupings is returned to the planners in a timely manner. Areas of activity include:

  • Equipment planning (removal and replacement of equipment, co-ordination of alternative equipment access across and between floors)
  • Engagement with specialist vendors for physical move of sensitive equipment
  • Office audits
  • Laboratory cleaning and decontamination programme
  • Space planning across and between floors for displaced staff and stored equipment


Provide organisational and practical support to progress the transition plan. This will include:
  • Organising user group meetings, ensuring constructive debate and negotiating compromises to reach practical solutions
  • Co-ordinating activities across floors and ensuring that best practice among groups of users are disseminated
  • Ensuring engagement from LMS staff
  • Keeping the senior leadership team alerted to problems and issues


Work with the planners and users to implement the programmes for the physical move of equipment

Engage with other repair planning workstreams, particularly Health and Safety, Laboratory Services and Estates to ensure alignment

Become a key point of contact for the planners for queries requiring input from LMS building users. Engage proactively with users as necessary to provide responses and relay these to the project team.

Following the physical repair, continue to liaise with building users and work with the Head of Research Environment and Head of Laboratory Services to ensure that all equipment is replaced correctly and is functional

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications / Training required (will be assessed from application form):

Essential:
  • BSc or equivalent in a scientific subject


Previous work experience required (will be assessed from application form and at interview) :

Essential:
  • Experience of working in a Biological Sciences research environment
  • Experience of projects with multiple workstreams and stakeholders
  • Project management experience
  • Understanding of the UK academic research environment
  • Experience of a relocation programme or a major operational transition /change programme

Desirable
  • Proven track record in managing projects with multiple workstreams and stakeholders
  • Experience of negotiating solutions that may involve compromise


Personal skills / Behaviours / Qualities (will be assessed from application form and at interview):

  • The ability to operate autonomously and planning of own workload
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with people at all levels inside and outside the LMS
  • Strong negotiation & influencing skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of the scientific research environment and current pressures on scientific research organisations
