Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Lead Engineer - Thermal Attribute to be based at our customer location in Gaydon, the UK.

Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.


The Role

  • The Thermal Attribute is part of the Vehicle Efficiency group within Vehicle Architecture and Vehicle Engineering. The wider team are responsible for Vehicle Efficiency across all vehicle programmes utilising the associated toolsets developed by the in-house technical specialist team. The Vehicle Efficiency group are responsible for tools, methods, standards, test procedures and CAE capabilities linked to functions and delivery of Energy Management, Thermal Energy Management, Heat protection, Aerodynamics, Water- & dirt management, Weights delivery, Road loads delivery and Aeroacoustics.
  • The Thermal Team are responsible for delivery of the Thermal Attribute and Thermal Efficiency across all vehicle programmes. The team leads features, capabilities and complex systems engineering within customer for functions relevant to energy efficiency, thermal energy management, charging thermal robustness, component thermal robustness, control strategy development, thermal performance, airflow management, brake cooling, infotainment thermal management etc. Development and verification methods used within the Thermal Team include 3-D CFD and heat management CAE tools, 1-D control systems analysis and whole vehicle-based testing in climatic facilities, on the track and in market.

Area of Responsibility

  • The Thermal Lead Engineer, within the thermal team, ensures that their functional delivery adds value to the end product, while ensuring the attribute and customer values are maintained. This will involve working on multiple vehicle projects, providing that functional expertise into a team of people with the required skillsets to incrementally improve the product.
  • This position will be backed by our internationally renowned technical specialist team and experienced thermal engineers, working across multiple thermal disciplines. The limit of learning within the role is only limited by your appetite and technical curiosity.
  • You will be part of the Thermal Efficiency squad which is accountable for the end-to-end delivery of the Front End Airflow System, Thermal Performance, Thermal Energy Management Control strategy, Active Airflow Devices, 0D and 1D CAE integration and Thermal Energy R&D.
  • Thermal design tools cover CAE (1D and 3D), Climatic wind tunnel and on-track assessments covering a large scope of thermal-related challenges. The role, therefore, is varied and allows the chosen candidate to demonstrate their technical and behavioural skills and ability to resolve issues with a customer mind-set.
  • The successful candidate will, on a day-to-day basis, be empowered to incrementally add value to our product, showcase their value add at all business levels and work closely with the other team members to ensure efficient and effective thermal delivery. Communication and soft skills are very important as you will be integrating as a team, characterised by action with vigour and efficiency. You will gain a specialism in a particular thermal function but have the opportunity to grow into other areas within the domain.

Knowledge / Experience

  • Applicants should be educated to Degree level
  • Applicants require a proven track record in either Thermal Management, energy management, electrification, Powertrain cooling or climate control
  • Knowledge of vehicle thermal systems and their functions and interactions would be required
  • Knowledge of customer level trades when developing thermal control strategies experience in developing these strategies would be beneficial
  • Applicants should ideally have experience of testing in climatic, aerodynamic or acoustic wind tunnels.
  • Applicants should ideally have experience of conducting or interpreting CFD / CAE analyses
  • Experience in EV system development would be desirable.
  • Hands on experience with thermal vehicle validation would be beneficial
